Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Belt Ranking system

Answer

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu youths and adults have different belt ranking systems.

Ages 4-15

  • White
  • Yellow
  • Orange
  • Green

Age 16 and up

· White

· Blue

· Purple

· Brown

· Black

· Black and red

· Red

All belts up to black belt have 4 stripes or degrees that must be awarded before progressing to the next belt. Black belt has 7 degrees. The 8th degree is an alternating red and black belt. The 9th and 10th degree are solid red belts. Only the founding Gracie Brothers Helio, Carlos, and their brothers will ever have the 10th degree belt, which is solid red.

Typically it takes about 10 years to reach black belt.
